Default Howdy and Bonjour from Eastern Canada!

Good day, folks! my sweetheart just bought her first car : an '08 Smart fortwo in white, (against my advice.. i'm a ford Guy! ) with 94500 km (60,000 miles ish) for 2900$. it came with three sets of tires and receipts for recent work. the previous owner changed both rear bearings a brake hose out front, and a few other odds and ends. the car seemed in good shape, so we bought it.

Since i'm a mechanical engineering student, a die-hard gearhead, and the man with all the tools (read:toys), I'm apparently the one who gets to maintain this little car, too. I'm the proud owner of an '00 Mercury Cougar, and have an account on that car's forums, where I post actively. I signed up because my own forums have been a very invaluable tool to nip any issues before they become problems. I'm very mechanically able, but not so experienced on this chassis or with european makes in general.

I was hoping you guys and girls could perhaps point me in the direction of typical issues and things to check? I know most cars have some common problems.. I read the '08 Fortwos had issues with transmission engagement, and a... software update (do these run CAN bus?) ? is this correct? is there anything else I should be aware of as a new owner?

I hope that wasn't too long a read! thanks a lot for the help, fellas!

    Usual problems are....

Turbo failing on petrol version above 50k miles. (repair or buy new or reconditioned replacement)
I have the 451 cdi diesel which is more robust (was not available in USA/Canada, as mine is UK model).

Fan heater motor fails quickly after about three years (take motor out and clean the dirty commutator with an emery block to remove dirt corrosion). Have done this as mine failed at 30k miles.

Springs can break easily if you hit a pothole so watch out.

Transmission problems with the automated clutch is not as bad in the 451 compared to previous 450 model, Usually they self correct by switching off, leave for a minute, and switch on again. Once you learn the box starftup routine from locked reverse, to Neutral to 1st gear and do not try to do fast shortcuts on both startup and shutdown, it works fine and will not go out of sequence

Software updates can help a little to make it smoother in changing, but when it goes wrong it usually needs a new actuator (usually on lot older cars, so its not that common a problem). I tend to drive manually (semi-auto) as ful auto is a bit of a rough change and noticable where power drops on change. You get far smoother changes and less wear driving it manually +/- shifts, I only use full auto when in heavy traffic in towns, rest of the time is manual shifts..

A/C tends to fail regulary as it leaks, will last around 6 to 8 months, then needs regassing. If you live in cold climate most of the time, then just let it fail and forget it, he he.

Welcome to the forum, and back to riding dirt. Its more fun than you remember, but just as dangerous so ride your age and dont feel bad letting the youngns pass. Just being able to go off-road and enjoy the ride is a reward in itself. Good luck on the bike hunt I love . Bike shopping

Howdy RatherB sailin, I see similarities in the things we are doing in our retired lives...good to find kindred. Sailing is not one of them though I do wonder how great it would be to sail nude though. Welcome to CNV and looking forward to read more posts from you...enjoy.
